Willow Springs defeats The World

The CCR Men’s Golf Association created a challenge match between the residents of the Willow Springs Subdivision and the non resident members.   The non residents were known as “The World” team and competed against the residents in a Ryder Cup style event that was the brainchild of MGA Co-Chairman Bill Thieriot.   Jimmy Nall captained his Willow Springs squad to a 16-10 win over Ray Ingersoll’s World Team.   Willow Springs jumped out to a early 11-1 lead only to see the lead dwindle to 11.5 to 8.5 before pulling away for the victory.  Nall led the celebration on the golf deck by sipping brandy out of CCR’s version of the Ryder Cup.  While Nall credited this teammates for their brilliant play he saved much of the credit for himself saying, “I spent all night Friday night at the bar sending my players home and buying drinks for the World team.”   The World Team is already talking about a rematch this year after such a demoralizing defeat.

After tieing at 22 under par with the team of Gary Walsh, Ian Stuttart, Scott Nelson and J.B. Queen; Joe Braver, Jeff DeHaven, Bill Smerek and Doug Johnson headed off to the sudden death playoff on #18.  The two teams tied the first time the hole was played and then Joe Braver birdied the hole and Doug Johnson scored a five net four the second time to capture the tournament title.

The two team tied for the Overall Low Gross title and headed off to #18 for the sudden death playoff.  They played the hole three times and remained hopelessly deadlocked and headed to hole #1 and its diabolical pin placement.  After everyone else three putted for double bogies, Andy McCartney knocked in his five foot putt for bogie and the victory.  They returned to the clubhouse and found enough beer in the keg for a celebratory toast.
